Project Overview

The Social Inclusion Project aims to increase health status and reduce health inequalities among targeted groups living with exclusion along the border region of Ireland.

There are three strands to the Project:

  1. Vulnerable Women
  2. Travellers, and
  3. Access

Vulnerable Women

Derry Well Woman is leading on this strand of the Project.  The Project will deliver a range of health improvement and training programmes aimed at tackling health inequalities across the border region to 6 ‘hard to reach’ & ‘most vulnerable’ groups of women.  These groups are: Women living with a cancer diagnosis, Women living with mental ill-health, Women living with domestic violence, Women living with a disabled child, Older women and Women and children.

It is hoped that 1,000 vulnerable women will become actively involved and participate in specially tailored programmes.

Travellers

  • A Traveller community health worker programme will be delivered to 20 participants from both sides of the border.
  • A cross border Traveller community health worker network will be established to support Travellers engaged in community health work.
  • A range of employability programmes / initiatives will be developed in co-operation will Travellers and Traveller groups throughout the region.

Access

A toolkit to promote inclusion will be developed and piloted within the region.  The toolkit will contain practical solutions to addressing factors which represent barriers to participation for excluded groups.  The toolkit will be based on best audit of best practice as well as on current practice within the region.
