cross border public health leadership programme for women

two women discussing the programme

This Programme is the first of its kind to be developed and delivered on a cross border basis in Ireland. The programme will run from November 2006 to November 2007.

about the Programme

The purpose of the Programme is to have, throughout the North West, a team of champions.

This core group of Cross Border Women leaders :

  • will develop a shared vision of the North West as an Interdependent and Fair Society;
  • are committed to Cross Border Work and the “Other Borders” Agenda and who;
  • will act in their local area to support the work of the Network.

The Programme will, therefore, ensure our Cross Border work remains both operational (as coordinated by local leaders and Network members) as well as strategic and coordinating in both this delivery of effective Cross Border Grassroots Community Action and in a coordinated and a united advocacy for change

The overarching principles of the Leadership programme will be those of the Health for All Movement and include:

  • The Right to Peace
  • The Right to Health
  • Equity
    Participants will represent both the geography already covered in “Other Borders” (Derry, Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Strabane, Limavady, Omagh and Fermanagh) as well as its Target Groups members.
  • Empowerment
    participants will be supported in their work (through mentoring etc) by other Network Partners.
  • Partnership
    All Network members will be invited to participate in the Programme development. Learning from the Programme will be cascaded and shared within and between communities and Network members.
  • Participation
    Programme content will be shaped and informed by participant and potential participant needs. The Programme will be one of action based learning in which new learning from participants will be fed into the group.

the content of the Programme

The programme content will be influenced by research findings and will include:

  • Research carried out to date as part of Other Borders
  • Extant findings of Research commissioned by DWW as outlined above
  • Learning from others locally, nationally & globally
  • Self Knowledge – knowledge about organisations and communities
  • Knowledge and skills on leadership
