Cancer Services

Are you coping with a cancer diagnosis? Over the years Derry Well Women has led the development of programmes for women living with life threatening illnesses.  Our support to women living with a cancer diagnosis includes cancer counselling, a fortnightly cancer support group, a 2-day complementary therapy programme, a course of complementary therapy sessions, an 8-week Well Programme, a Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme, and a Stress Anxiety Management Programme.  This four-strand approach – involving support, therapeutic and educational elements which all complement each other has been developed in consultation with users.

Cancer Support Group

The cancer support group is open to all women living with a cancer diagnosis. The support group meets once a fortnight on a Thursday morning from 11am – 1pm.

One Day Cancer programme

Our one day cancer programme is based on the principle that each person needs to be views as a whole, but with emotional, spiritual, mental and physical dimensions.

There will be a One Day Cancer Programme for Carers of people living with cancer on Tuesday 18th July 2023 from 10am – 4pm.  To register please contact Patricia or Oonagh on: 02871360777

Living Well Cancer programme

The Well Programme was developed by Derry Well Woman in 1999. Designed for people living with a cancer diagnosis, the Well Programme is a 36-hour behavioural medicine programme, which aims to address all aspects of a woman’s health: mental, emotional and spiritual. The programme provides practical support and tips to support with every day living for those with cancer, alongside positive, healing and life-affirming elements, which help us to live more peacefully and joyfully. Sessions are held once a week for 10 weeks, and the programme runs 3 times per year.  The next Well Programme 10will take place on Tuesday 25th April 2023 from 10.30am – 1.30pm in Derry Well Women.  Strabane Koram Centre – Wednesday 26th April 2023 from 10.30am – 1.30pm.

Mental Health & Wellbeing Programme

8 week programme

Some topics & activities covered during the programme include:

  • Living with Change and Uncertainty
  • Meditation and Mindfulness
  • Emotional Awareness – learning to identify and manage our emotions more effectively
  • Prioritising Life – Jar of Life (Stones)
  • Diet, Nutrition and Sleep
  • Hygiene
  • Aromatherapy
  • The importance of Journalling,

Coffee Morning

Our coffee mornings are an opportunity for parents and carers to meet with other families who have similar life experiences and challenges in everyday life. The morning will offer support while also allowing some ‘Me’ time thrown in. There will be a facilitator/activity on a theme subject during the morning.

THRIVE Programme

‘Thrive’ is a 6-session programme which runs once a week for 6 weeks and is led by a Cancer Focus NI facilitator with an emphasis on Health and Wellbeing. It is designed for younger women who have had a breast cancer diagnosis and are ready to begin to ‘Thrive’.

The programme is packed with tools and techniques to help you reflect on where you are now and how you might want to move forward in a positive way.  It will provide a safe space for you to share your story, if you feel comfortable doing so, with other women who have had similar experiences to you.

Sessions will include

  • Goal setting
  • Exploration of common emotions
  • Managing different types of thinking
  • Managing stress and boundaries
  • Values and needs recognition
  • Consideration of physical health

Cancer Counselling

This counselling service is provided by a specially trained team who have completed a Certificate in Cancer Counselling.  Within the Cancer Counselling Service, women can also avail of one -to-one complementary therapy sessions.    Anyone wishing to make an appointment for any of the above services please contact the centre on: 02871360777.
