The Well Programme was developed by Derry Well Woman in 1999. It was developed with people living with a cancer diagnosis for people with a cancer diagnosis.
background to the programme
The programme is based on ‘Tipping the scales’ which was pioneered in Dublin by Dr Sean Collins and Rhoda Draper. The Well Programme is a behavioural medicine programme. It aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to change damaging behaviours. The Well Programme helps individuals explore their:
- physical well being
- emotional well being
- mental well being
- spiritual well being
As a result of this process participants can implement a plan for positive change at each level.
about the programme
Each 12 week programme is delivered by two trained facilitators. In the last year 28 men and women participated in three well programmes in and out of Derry Well Woman. We have developed a self-assessment and lifestyle inventory tool which allows us to measure the health gain to participants. The inventory looks at six key areas:
- physical
- emotional
- spiritual
- mental
- behaviour lifestyle
- reliance on health services
All participants to this year’s programmes recorded improvement across all six key areas.
